Smith, Gerrit
(6 mar. 1797, Utica, N.Y., EE.UU.–28 dic. 1874, Nueva York, N.Y.).

Reformador y filántropo estadounidense. De familia acaudalada, participó activamente en el movimiento antialcohólico (1828) y construyó uno de los primeros hoteles donde no se consumía alcohol de EE.UU., en Peterboro, N.Y. A partir de 1835 fue un abolicionista activo y convirtió su hotel en una estación del Underground Railroad (red clandestina). Colaboró en la formación del Partido de la Libertad y fue su candidato presidencial, sin éxito, en 1848 y en 1852. Pagó los gastos judiciales de muchos esclavos detenidos en virtud las leyes de los esclavos fugitivos. Regaló una granja a su amigo John Brown y financió algunas de sus actividades.
